2nd Annual “BBQ for the Boys”

Gentlemen, many of you helped make our BBQ fundraiser a success last year. We were able to donate a huge sum to the Boy/Cub Scouts, and that has helped those ministries remain strong and even grow. The Troops are continuing in their mission to attract boys from our larger community, and the BBQ helps them not only cover their usual costs but also offer scholarships to kids who otherwise couldn’t participate. It is a true outreach ministry.

It’s time again for the “BBQ for the Boys” and we’re running with what worked last time around. We’ll be selling pulled pork by the quart, for $20 per quart, the weekend of April 25-26. That means we need your help to talk it up in your classes, and we need volunteers to work the Pre-order tables, as well as the actual weekend of the cooking, cutting, and distribution (starting Friday night, April 24, at around 6pm, and wrapping up on Sunday at noon).

FIELD TRIP! The Conference Men’s Retreat

Last year our Bishop in South Carolina, Jonathan Holston, issued a call for men across the Conference to make the effort to attend the United Methodist Men’s spiritual retreat. The Sons of Thunder answered that call by bringing our first group of guys, and seven of us enjoyed a really solid time together. As I’ve mentioned to some of you, the 2015 Men’s Spiritual Retreat is upcoming, and registration is now open, so let’s get some guys together again. It will be pure, unadulterated (Christian) man time.

This year the retreat is in Myrtle Beach again, on February 20-22 (Friday-Sunday). There will be keynote speakers, worship, excellent meals, and plenty of free time in the Myrtle Beach area. The first few guys who respond will have their registration and lodging costs taken care of in full, so all you’ll be responsible for is your food costs that weekend. For more info, click here. If you’re interested, let me know ASAP, and no later than Sunday, February 1, so that I can complete the group registration.

Men’s Triple Feature

The new men’s study offering in 2015 is the “Men’s Triple Feature.” In small groups, guys will watch three popular full-length films, divided into manageable parts over 12 weeks. Sessions will last under 90 minutes, with time for fellowship, viewing, and discussion about the spiritual insights of these powerful movies. Men of all ages, if you’ve never joined a study before, or a men’s small group in particular, now is the time!

The study begins the week of February 15 and finishes up the week of May 3, and the deadline to register is Sunday, January 18. We hope to offer several options of meeting days/times, depending on your feedback and the level of demand, so follow the link below to register:

Last, but not least, I will need a few good men to take the lead as facilitators in some of the small groups. Be sure to indicate in the registration if you’re willing and able to serve in this capacity. Thanks, fellas! With any questions, contact Rev. Josh McClendon (jmcclendon@shandon-umc.org).
